About the Artist:

Isma Gul Hasan is an illustrator based in Lahore, Pakistan. She received her bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication Design from Beaconhouse National University in 2017, and completed an MA in Illustration with a distinction from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London in 2020. Her current practice focuses on depicting the inner world that women inhabit, and explores themes like time, memory, agency, trauma and hope through landscapes and otherworldly depictions of space. This is informed by her interest in feminist fiction and nonfiction, as well as Bergsonian concepts of inner time and outer time.

Allowing literary texts to guide the shape her work takes, Hasan is interested in creating visuals that are layered and textured. She uses techniques like graphite rendering, collage, monoprinting and digital drawing to show the richness and complexity of our inner selves. Much like time and memory, Hasan’s aim is to have a fluid, ever-changing process that is multifaceted yet unique, allowing her to utilize different methods of making depending on the theme and mood of the subject matter.
